Why are banks closed?
Most US banks follow the holiday schedule set by the Federal Reserve System. When the Fed is closed, banks cannot process transactions, wire transfers, or clear checks, so they close their branches as well.
What you can still do on bank holidays:
- Use ATMs to withdraw cash or make deposits
- Access online banking and mobile apps
- Use Zelle, Venmo, or other peer-to-peer payment apps
- Schedule bill payments (processed on the next business day)
Note on Standard Reserve Holidays
If a holiday falls on a Saturday, the Federal Reserve Banks and Branches will be open the preceding Friday. However, the Board of Governors will be closed. If a holiday falls on a Sunday, all Federal Reserve offices will be closed the following Monday.
